It is often said that no one loves us more than our parents. Perhaps, it is true. It is very rare that we find guardian angels in someone other than our parents. So, when Gretel tormented Bruno, humiliated him he turned his face away and let her stay alone. A silly lover of dolls, Gretel spent her day in front of the mirror, cuddling her puppets. Yet, when Bruno is stuffed into a gas chamber and blown up, Gretel cries all day, not for her falls, but for Bruno. Perhaps, this is true love. Gretel portrays what love truly is. We never realise that we love someone when they are alive, but it drowns us and chokes us, surging over us like a massive wave, when we can no longer see them smile.
