It is named after the Jallianwala Bagh (Temple) in the northern Indian city of Amritsar. On April 13, 1919, British Indian Army soldiers started shooting at an unarmed crowd of men, women and children.

The Jallianwala Bagh Massacre took place on August 13th, 1919. It was where thousands of Indians lost their lives in Jallianwala Bagh, Amritsar. Among the dead were the women and children who were leaving after visiting the Golden Temple .The incident showed the behavior of the British officers towards the Indians. It showed the wild side of the British. They constituted by an oppressive ideology of the British government that was ruling over India. The British government had imposed a Martial Law in Amritsar. According to Martial Law, the public was prohibited from moving around and having gatherings. However, this was unknown to the mass gathering at Jallianwala Bagh. The Jallianwala Bagh Massacre showed the ugly side of the British government. It was a mass murder in cold blood of hundreds of innocent and unarmed citizens. April 13th, 1919, was the darkest day in the history of the Freedom struggle of India.
