Answer:
At some point, when the thing that’s been on our hearts is to faithfully follow after Jesus … at some point … let’s be honest, it can feel as though this is just all too hard. Maybe it’s time to turn back. It’s just too hard.
We’ve all heard it said that, “life wasn’t meant to be easy”. And it can be discouraging because you know that actually it’s true. You look at your life and that’s exactly what’s going on. It just ain’t easy! Jesus put it like this:
Matthew 7:13-14 You can enter true life only through the narrow gate. The gate to hell is very wide, and there is plenty of room on the road that leads there. Many people go that way. But the gate that opens the way to true life is narrow. And the road that leads there is hard to follow. Only a few people find it.
I know what you’re thinking: “Gees Louise, Berni, all THAT is, is bad news. All that is, is Jesus telling us that life wasn’t meant to be easy. What’s the good of that?”
And yet Jesus is a realist. He knows that following Him can make our lives even more difficult because we’re heading in the opposite direction to everybody else. They all seem to be travelling the easy road and you’re travelling the hard road.
But Jesus isn’t interested in the trinkets and baubles of this world. He wants you to have life. Real life. Abundant life. And that … that’s where this difficult road is headed. Sure, following after Jesus isn’t easy some days. Absolutely, going against the flow can be tough. But the reward is “true life”. A life of meaning. A life of purpose. A life that counts for something. A life that satisfies, deeply. That’s where this is all headed.
And that’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today
