Commerce was very developed in ancient times. Because ancient communities used exchange of goods as a replacement for money. Various goods were exchanged for others.

For example ancient Egyptians were doing commerce with their neighbors in order to get rare and exotic goods not found in Egypt. It has been established by archeologists that they established commerce with Palestine in order to obtain gold and other manufactured goods. They were traveling long distances, meeting in certain key points or going directly to markets in the ancient cities, were the exchange was made. Many of the obtained goods were then offered to Gods and the Pharaohs. Other ancient communities, such as Babylon, were doing commerce in similar ways.

Commerce become very important because is was a reason to develop one of the first types of writing: cuneiform writing. Also, bureaucracy appared. In order to control the trading routes registers, contracts and clear laws on the transport of goods were needed.

Commerce was also a strong indication of how strong a community was, so it was very important to keep monopoly in trading certain goods.
