Rain to me feels comforting.
When it rains, I remember all the times I’ve woken up to raindrops landing on my window, tapping gently and then falling onto the outer window sill made of metal, smelled the moist air. I reminds me of being safe in my room, or outside where it’s lush and green, under a tree. Or in the peat bogs. Again, it feels safe. The smell of rain makes me think of a burning fire outside, the smell of the ashes and rain mingling. It makes me think of how my skin gets wet just by being exposed to the air, saturated with water-vapor.
The sound and smell of rain also bring me back to the morning after the night I had my first kiss. Somehow we fit in my bed, as it was 3 am and I didn’t want him to have to walk for an hour through town. It was also the first time I had cuddled with a guy, and it was amazing. It brings me back to that memory. I still love the sound of rain when I’m in bed or just at home with my partner.
When we lived in another area of town, in Lilleküla, where the majority of houses were built between the second half of the 19′th century and the 1920’s, we’d go for midnight walks in the humid summer nights. Sometimes it rained. It was amazing. I loved it when we made out in the rain, at night, on empty streets with old yet renovated houses on both sides of the street as if you were back in time when they were as new as they look.
I love it when it rains.*
*But I dislike it immensely when the moisture makes my naturally curly hair (that I straighten and use products on to keep it straight) re-curl and become rough.
