Explanation:

Given a parallel beam of monochromatic light is allowed to be incident normally on a plane transmission grating having 5000 lines per cm and second order spectral line is found to be diffracted through 30 degree . calculate the wave length of light ?

  • Given grating transmission d = 1/5000 cm
  • Line diffracted = 30 degree
  • So sin 30 = ½
  • So m = 2
  • So λ is wavelength of light
  • So d is the grating element
  • Theta is angle of diffraction of n th order.
  • So n is the order of spectrum
  • So wavelength of light λ = d sin theta / n
  •                                              = 1/5000 x ½ / 2
  •                                              = 1/5000 x ½ x ½
  •                                                = 5 x 10^-5 cm
