There are many reasons why parallel connection is preferred over series connection -

1. Total resistance in parallel connection is less than the lowest resistance in the circuit.
2. Total current is more.
3. Individual switches can be provided to each device.
4. Potential difference is same for all the devices.

Two bulbs in a simple parallel circuit each enjoy the full voltage of the battery. This is why the bulbs in the parallel circuit will be brighter than those in the series circuit. Another advantage to the parallel circuit is that if one loop is disconnected, then the other remains powered.
