A parallel plate capacitor of capacitance C0
is connected to a battery and
charged to a potential difference V0
. After disconnecting the battery, the gap
between the plates is completely filled with a slab of dielectric constant K.
How much energy is stored in the capacitor (a) in the first state? (b) in the
second state? and (c) which one is larger and why?

Answer:

The strength of electric field is reduced due to presence of dielectric and if the total charge on the plates is kept constant then the potential difference is reduced across the capacitor plates. In this way dielectric increases the capacitance of capacitor.
