A parallel plate capacitor with air between the plates has a capacitance of 8 pf . the separation between the plates is now reduced by half and the space between them is filled with a medium of dielectric constant 5. calculate the value of capacitance of parallel plate capacitor in second case.

since we know that capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor when placed in a medium of dielectric constant K is,
C = (apsilen zero X K x A )/d
8 = (epsilen zero X A)/d...........(1) since K = 1 for air.
now again when K= 5, d' = d/2, then
C = (epsilen zero X 5 X A )/(d/2)
= (10 epsilen zero X A)/d.................(2)
eqn(1)/eq(2)
we get, 8/C = 1/10
hence, C = 80 pf
