let the velocity at last 2nd second be x

then, velocity at last second= x+9.8

now, x+x+9.8=2x+9.8

now, 2x+9.8=40

2x = 30.2

x = 15.1

there fore, velocity at last second= 15.1+9.8

= 24.9

now, initial velocity = 0

final velocity= 24.9

apply formula v^2=u^2+2as

now, 24.9^2= 0+2×9.8×s

620.01 = 19.6× s

s = 620.01÷19.6=31.63
