A particle is in linear simple harmonic motion between two points A and B, 10 cm apart. Take the direction from A to B as the positive direction and give the signs of velocity, acceleration and force on the particle when it is
(a) at the end A,
(b) at the end B,
(c) at the mid-point of AB going towards A,
(d) at 2 cm away from B going towards A,
(e) at 3 cm away from A going towards B, and
(f) at 4 cm away from B going towards A.

Answer:

When at A, the velocity is 0, acceleration is 0 and force is also 0. But I have to say something, aren't there any Numerical values?

Explanation:

Okay now, when the particle is at B it has the same quantities as A.

Mid point =. (=)

2cm away = <,

3 cm away = >

4 cm away = <

Linear Simple Harmonic Motion

Explanation:

(a) At the end A, particle is at rest, so velocity is zero. Acceleration is positive and force is also positive and directed along AP.

(b) At the end B, velocity is zero. Acceleration and force are negative and directed along BP.

(c) At the mid-point of AB going towards A, particle is at mean P and tends to move along PA. Velocity is positive. Acceleration and force are zero.

(d) At 2 cm away from B going towards A, particle is at Q and tends to move along QP, a negative direction. So velocity, acceleration and force all are positive.

(e) At 3 cm away from A going towards B, particle is at $ and tends to move along RP, a positive direction. Velocity and acceleration and force, all are positive.

(f) At 4 cm away from B going towards A, particle is at S and tends to move along SA, a negative direction. Velocity is negative but acceleration and force are positive.
