A particle is moving in a straight line and passes
through a point P with positive velocity 8 m/s. The
particle moves with constant negative acceleration of
magnitude 2 m/s2 for 5 s and thereafter moves with
constant velocity. How long after leaving the point P,
the particle returns to point P?

Answer:

There is a tendency to believe that if an object is moving at constant speed then it has no acceleration. This is indeed true in the case of an object moving along a straight line path. On the other hand, a particle moving on a curved path is accelerating whether the speed is changing or not.
