if in same direction then F = 4+3 = 7 N
if in opposite direction then F = 4-3 = 1 N

Force is vector quantity i.e with magnitude, you need to mention its direction as well. Resultant force would be the vector addition of the 2 mentioned forces. E.g 1)- if both of these forces are in same direction then resultant would be 4 + 3 = 7 N. 2)- If these are in the opposite direction then resultant would be 4 + (-3) = 1N (in the direction of 4N.
