Distance covered =12m +5m =17m

Let AB and BC be the path formed by the movement of the particle.

therefore, AB=12m

BC=5m

Construction:

We join A and C to form a right angled triangle (since, north direction is perpendicular to east direction)

Applying Pythagoras theorem we get,

AB²+BC²=AC²

or, (12)² + (5)²=AC²

or, 144+25=AC²

or, 169=AC²

therefore, AC=√169=13m

Thus displacement=13m
