Distance covered =12m +5m =17m
Let AB and BC be the path formed by the movement of the particle.
therefore, AB=12m
BC=5m
Construction:
We join A and C to form a right angled triangle (since, north direction is perpendicular to east direction)
Applying Pythagoras theorem we get,
AB²+BC²=AC²
or, (12)² + (5)²=AC²
or, 144+25=AC²
or, 169=AC²
therefore, AC=√169=13m
Thus displacement=13m
