Explanation:    in the diagram AB is the distance covered by particle to move toward east and BC is the distance covered by particle to ove toward north.

    AB=5km

   BC=12km                 

  hence total distance covered  is =5 +12= 17km

now

applying Pythagoras theorem   (see from the diagram were it is a right angle triangle)

AB^2+BC^2=AC^2

5^2+12^2=AC^2

25+144=AC^2

169=AC^2

taking square root both the side

13=AC

HENCE the displacement is 13 km
