A particle of mass 9 g is placed at some distance above a uniformly charged long horizontal sheet of surface charge density 5 c/m2. what is the charge on particle so that it would not fall when left freely

sol. Intensity due to sheet on charged sheet =charge density/ 2 absolute permittivity
=5/2×8.85×10`¹²
=2.8 ×10¹¹N/C²
we know that,
F= qE
for equilibrium in air,
mg =qE. ( F=mg)
q=mg/E
= 0.009×10/2.8×10¹¹
= 3.21×10`¹³ C
Hence, particle of mass 9g should have 3.21×10`¹³C to be in equilibrium .
