the charge on particle is mg/E

Given : A particle of mass m is in equilibrium in a vertical electric field of magnitude E directed upward.

To find : The charge on the particle.

solution : as it is given that a particle of mass m is in equilibrium in a vertical electric field of magnitude E directed upward.

at equilibrium, weight of particle ( directed downward) is balanced by electric field ( direction vertically upward)

so weight of particle = electric field

⇒mg = qE

⇒q = mg/E

Therefore the charge on particle is mg/E
