A particle of mass m moving with velocity v strikes a stationary particle of mass 2m and sticks to it.

To find,

The speed of the system.

Solution,

The momentum of the system will remain constant. In this case,

Initial momentum is mv

Final momentum is 3mV,  V is speed of system

Using conservation of momentum such that,

mv = 3mV

V=\dfrac{v}{3}

So, the speed of the system is \dfrac{v}{3}.
