Explanation:

Given a particle starts from (0,0)and moves along y axis to a point (0,25 m) and to point (0, - 25)then the ratio of magnitudes of distance to displacement is

  • Total distance travelled will be S = 0 to y1 = 25 + 25 and 0 to y2 = 25
  •                                          So 25 + 25 + 25 = 75 m
  • Total displacement D = 0 toy1 – y1 to 0 + 0 to y2
  •                                    = 25 – 25 + 25
  •                                      = 25 m
  • Magnitude of displacement = 25 m
  • Therefore ratio will be distance / magnitude of displacement = S/D
  •                                                                                  = 75 / 25
  •                                                                                 = 3/1
  •                 = 3: 1
