Given : A particle travels due North a distance of 30m in 10 seconds and then another 40m along west in 20 seconds.
To find : The average velocity of the particle.
solution : This question can be solved easily with the help of vector form.
A particle travels due North a distance of 30
m in 10 seconds.
displacement of particle, s₁ = 30 j
again the particle travels 40 m. along west in 20 seconds.
so displacement of particle, s₂ = -40 i
now average velocity of particle = (total displacement)/total time taken
= (s₁ + s₂)/(t₁ + t₂)
= (30j - 40i)/(10 + 20)
= (- 40i + 30j)/30
magnitude of velocity = √{40² + 30²}/30 = 50/30 = 1.67 m/s
Therefore the average velocity of particle is 1.67 m/s.
