A particle travels half of the distance of a straight
journey with a speed 6 m/s. The remaining part of
the distance is covered with speed 2 m/s for half of
the time of remaining journey and with speed 4 m/s
for the other half of time. The average speed of the
particle is

Explanation:

"Let d be the total distance

Time taken for the 6 m/s speed then t1 =d/2/6 = d/12 s

Time taken for the 4 m/s speed then t2 = x/2 = d/2 – x/4 = x = d/6 m

T2 = d/6/2 = d/12 = t3

Hence,

Total time T = t1 + t2 + t3

T = 3d/12 = d/4 s

Hence speed = d/t = d/d/4 = 4 m/s
