A particular trait is selected while other is rejected is because of the principle "SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST". The traits which cope up the adverse environmental conditions are selected while the traits which can't withstand these harsh agro climatic conditions are rejected.
The fittest traits in a given natural conditions also have comparatively significant reproductive potential to produce more offsprings.Over several generations, the proportion of offsprings having the desirable FITTEST Tait will be increased and will become stable in the population, while the traits which can't withstand these adverse conditions, will eventually be extincted from the population. Hope it helps.
