A path of 2 meter wide is built along the border and inside a square garden of side 60 meter, find:
(a) the area of path
(b) the cost of cultivating flowers in the remaining portion of the garden at the rate of 5 rupees per m.sq.

(i) Side of the square garden = 60 m and

Width of the path along the border = 2m

Side of square garden without path = 60– (2+2) = 60 – 4= 56m

Now Area of path = Area of ABCD – Area of EFGH

= (AB * AD) – (EF * EH)

= (60 * 60) – (56 * 56)

= 3600 – 3136

= 464 m2

(ii) Area of remaining portion = 56* 56 = 3136m2

The cost of planting grass in 1 m2 of the garden = Rs 5

The cost of planting grass in 3136m2 of the garden = Rs 5 * 3136 = Rs 15, 680
