A path of uniform width 5m runs round the inside of a rectangular field of dimensions 40m multiplied by 30m . Find the area of the path.

Let ABCD be the rectangular field and let EFGH be the inside boundry of the path.

Then, AB = 40m and AD = 30m

width of the path is 5m

EF = (40 - 2× 5)m = 30m

EH = (30- 2 × 5)m = 20m

Area of the path= Area (rect. ABCD) - Area (EFGH)

= (AB × AD) - (EF × EH) = (40 × 30) - (30×20)

= (1200 - 600) = 600m²

hence the area of the path is 600m².
