A pen costs Rs 3.50 more than a pencil and the cost of 3 pens and 2 pencils is Rs 13 taking x and y as the costs of pen and pencil respectively writ two simultaneous equations in x & y which satisfy the statement given above. Also find the values of x& y

Given:-

Cost of one pen = x

Cost of one pencil = y

3x+2y = 13.................. (1)

A pen costs Rs. 3.50 more than a pencil.

X = y+3.50

X- y = 3.50.................... (2)

From (1) and (2)

3x +2y = 13

(2) implies... 2x-2y = 7

......................

5x = 20

X= 4.

Substituting x in (1)...

3x+2y = 13

3(4)+2y = 13

12 +2y = 13

2y = 13-12

Y = 1/2.

. : x= 4,y = 1/2.
