A pencil partially dipped in water appears to be broken due to refraction of light. (Option D)

• When the light rays travel from one medium to another medium, there is a tendency of the bending of the travelling path of the light rays, due to the different density of those two mediums. This phenomenon is simply known as the refraction.

• Similarly, water is more dense than the air and that's why the light rays coming from the dipped portion of the pencil appears to be bended (due to refraction) as compared with the other part (which is not dipped in water) of the pencil.

• So,the whole process is caused due to the refraction of light rays.

Answer:

option : D

Explanation:

When one look at the portion of the pencil that is inside the water, light travels from water to air via glass. This light ray changes the medium and undergoes refraction. As a result, the pencil inside the water appears to be broken near the surface of water.
