Explanation:

The force produced by the man's weight is distributed over hundreds of nails of the nail bed. Therefore, the force applied by individual nail is reduced. ... The nails do not penetrate in the man's skin and he does not get hurt. Thus, a person can lie on a bed of nails if there are very large number of nails.

Answer:

i)It appears to the spectator that anyone lying on this "bed" would be injured by the nails, but this is not so. Assuming the nails are numerous enough, the weight is distributed among them so that the pressure exerted by each nail is not enough to puncture the person's skin.

ii)P=FA P = F A . The SI unit of pressure is pascal and 1 Pa=1 N/m2 1 Pa = 1 N/m 2 .

iii)The pressure is defined as the force per unit area. i.e P=F/A

So the pressure depends on the force F and area A of contact.

As sharp tipped nail has very small area of contact than a blunt nail (not sharp), so it will give more pressure when a small force is applied.
