Given, speed of the boat in still water = 5 km/hrLet the speed of the stream be x km/hr∴ Speed of the boat upstream = (5 – x) km/hrSpeed of the boat downstream = (5 + x) km/hr Given, time to cover 40 km upstream = 3 × time to cover 40 km downstream  thus the speed of the steam is 5 divided by 2 km/hr
