The immune system of an infected person is affected and becomes close to unreactive to infections detected in the body.

Explanation:

HIV: Human Immunodeficiency Virus

AIDS: Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome

As the name suggests, the targeted site of action is the immune system of the body. The virus attacks the body and starts replicating its genetic material using the cells in the body. The virus goes unnoticed for years meanwhile the virus continues to attack the immune system, reducing its ability to recognize the virus as an antigen/foreign body.

The HIV infection shows symptoms of a flu when infected initially then becomes asymptomatic until the disease progresses to become AIDS.  Symptoms of AIDS become evident when the individual starts to loose weight drastically, night sweats, frequent and recurrent infections, secondary infections, excess fatigue, persistent diarrhoea, ulcers, pneumonia etc.

Immune system of the individual is highly compromised by the time the infection has progressed to AIDS and becomes very susceptible to minor infections and loses ability to recover from simple flu. The body also begins to loose its ability to function normally.

  • AIDS is a disease that affects a person's immune system and lowers immunity.
  • HIV destroys lymphocytes, which are one kind of white blood cell (WBC).
  • Infected people are more susceptible to various illnesses and infections that can kill them.
  • As a result, the body of an infected individual is unable to fight even simple illnesses such as the common cold, and minor infections can be deadly in this condition.
