Common ascariasis is caused by the common round worm Ascaris lumbricoides. It is an intestinal worm, white in colour and having females longer than the males. There is no intermediate host of the parasite, so man acquires infection by directly ingesting Ascaris eggs. Since a large number of adult Ascaris worms normally infest a single host, they obstruct the intestinal passage and thereby causing abdominal discomfort, like colic pain, impaired digestion, diarrhoea and vomiting. The infection is followed by anaemia, leucocytosis and eosinophilia.
