A person is walking towards west for 50 meters and then turns left and walks for 70 meters. If he
rum back and walk in the same way for 20 meters then find the displacement of the person and in

Answer:

Displacement= 20m

Distance= 140m

Explanation:

Because displacement is the measure of the shortest distance between final and initial point, i.e., addition of final and initial points. In the question it is clearly given that, 'the person firstly walks some distance and then returns back' which means that it's initial and final points are same; therefore we assume it 0. 'Then he again covers a distance of 20m' which means initial point=0 and final point=20 and after addition we will get 20m as the answer.

Distance is the total path covered by a body. In the question the person first covers 50m then 70m and then 20m which means total distance is addition of 50, 70 and 20 which will give you 170m.

Answer:

displacement = 70.71 m

His current position : south west (wrt the starting point)

Explanation:

first he heads towards the West (50m)

from there he turns left, towards South (70m)

he runs back and retraces the path (that is, towards North this time) and walks in the same way for 20m.

(so basically he only walked 70m - 20m = 50m towards South)

The displacement here is the shortest distance between the current point and the starting point. You can depict this by a triangle.

In this case, the hypotenuse of the triangle is the final displacement. You can easily find that out using Pythagoras' theorem. Here, hypotenuse= (50^2) + (50^2)

hope it helps!

P.S. Either this is the correct answer or I interpreted it in the wrong way.

If you mean he runs back to the STARTING POINT by saying 'he runs back' then the displacement will be 20 m as there was ultimately no change in the position of the person in the first case. The total distance will be (50m + 70m)*2 + 20 m = 260 m (I have multiplied it by 2 because he covered that distance twice)
