Hope, the image helps.

Displacement between initial and final position = 4m

Since, after moving west the person is 3m west of its origin and then the person turns north-east and moves 5m, the person ends up 4m north of its origin.

We get 4m by Pythagoras theorem,  i.e

              base² + perpendicular² = hypotenuse²

          => 3²  +  perpendicular²   =  5²

          => 9  +  perpendicular² = 25

          => perpendicular² = 25 - 9

          => perpendicular² = 16

          => perpendicular = √16  =  4m  =  Displacement
