Answer :

A person moves 3km towards east and turned towards north and travelled a distance of 4km.

We have to find

  • Distance
  • Displacement

Distance is defined as the actual length of path covered by moving object.

  • It is a scalar quantity.
  • It has only magnitude.
  • SI unit : m

➠ Distance = AB + BC

➠ Distance = 3 + 4

Distance = 7 km

Displacement is defined as the shortest distance b/w initial and final position of the entire journey.

  • It is a vector quantity.
  • It has both magnitude as well as direction.
  • SI unit : m

➠ Displacement = AC

As per pythagoras theorem ;

  • AC² = AB² + BC²
  • AC² = 3² + 4² = 25
  • AC = 5 km

Displacement = 5 km
