and north direction be

.

Thus displacement of the man

S

=8

So, magnitude of displacement ∣

S

Distance = AO + AB = 8km + 6km = 14 km

Displacement = O to B ( shortest path)

In right triangle AOB,

OB² = AO² + AB² [as, H² = B² + P²]

 OB =  \sqrt{ {8}^{2}  +  {6}^{2} }  \\ OB=  \sqrt{64 + 36}  \\ OB =  \sqrt{100}  = 10km

Thus, displacement = 10 km
