CORRECT QUESTION:

A person on horseback moves according to the velocity time graph as shown. The vertical axis is marked in increments of 2 m/s, the horizontal axis is marked in increments of 5 m/s. Find the total displacement of person?

Calculation:

  • Always remember : The net displacement can be calculated by obtaining the total area under a VELOCITY-TIME graph.

The total displacement is from area of :

 \rm d = area(a) + area(b) + area(c)

 \rm \implies d = (\dfrac{1}{2} \times 10 \times 2) + ( \dfrac{1}{2} \times 15 \times 4) + ( 15 \times 2)

 \rm \implies d = 10+ 30 +30

 \rm \implies d = 70 \: metres

So, net displacement is 70 metres.
