Chlorine and chloramine are found in city water and must be removed for fish. The chlorine in tap water is toxic to fish. Use a dechlorinator to clean any water before adding it to the aquarium. While one should never put hot water in a fish tank with live fish, it is essential to put water that is the correct temperature. The temperature of the tank, and the temperature of the water you are adding should be as near the exact same temperature.
