A person produced a sound with a siren near a cliff and heard echoes after 5 seconds. Find the distance of the siren from the cliff if velocity of sound waves produced is 340 m/s?​

We have,

velocity of sound in air (v) = 340m/s

time to echo siren(t)= 5sec

(an echo is returning of sound after reflection from a surface)

Let 'h' be the distance between siren and cliff.

Now since the sound has first went from person to cliff and after reflecting back(echoing) from the cliff it travelled distance = h+h = 2h

Using, Speed=distance/time

we get distance = speed ×time

therefore 2h = 340× 5= 1700meters

==> h= 1700/2 = 850meters

Hence, distance between siren and cliff is 850m
