A person scored 15% and failed by 40 marks. Another person scored 75% and scored 80 marks more than the passing marks. What are the maximum marks and the percentage of the passing marks?

Let x be the number
15%x - 40 = 75%x + 80
15/100x - 40 = 75/100x + 80
15/100(x) X 100 - 40 x 100 = 75/100(x) X 100 + 80 x 100
15x - 4000 = 75x + 8000
75x - 15x = 8000+4000 ( transpose)
60x = 12000
60x/60 = 12000/60
X= 200
Maximum marks = 75% x 200 + 80
= 150 + 80 = 230
