Let there be 5 parts, with each costing Rs. 100
Hence, C.P of 5 parts = Rs. 500
one-fifth sold at 25% gain
C.P of 1 part = 100
S.P = C.P*(100+G)/100 = 100*125/100 = 125
two-fifth at a gain of 25%
C.P of 2 parts = 200
S.P = C.P*(100+G)/100 = 200*125/100 = 250
C.P of remaining 2 parts = 200
Loss = 25%
S.P = C.P*(100-L)/100 = 200*75/100 = 150
Total C.P = 500
Total S.P = 125+250+150 = 525
Gain = 25
Gain% = G/C.P * 100 = 25/500 * 100 = 5%
Hence, he has a gain of 5% in the overall transaction.
Hope it helps.
