Let , total number of pens he buys =  x

And as given :

Total number of things bought was 108 , So

Total number of pencils he buys = 108 -  x

Also given : A person spent Rs.564 in buying pens and pencils if cost of each pen is Rs.7 and each pencil is Rs.3 , So

7 x  + 3 ( 108 - x ) = 564 ,

7 x  + 324  - 3 x  = 564 ,

4 x  = 240 ,

x = 60

Therefore,

Total number of pens he buys = 60

And

Total number of pencils he buys = 108 - 60 = 48 ( Ans )
