In case of plane mirror, distance of object = distance of image

Since the person is at 6m and moves 3m forward it means he is now 3 m away from the mirror.
Distance of object = 3 m = distance of image

Therefore distance between person and image = 3+3 = 6m

Given:

  • Person is standing 6 metres from plane mirror.

  • He moves 3 metres forward.

To find:

  • Distance between person and image?

Calculation:

First of all, let us understand the image characteristics produced by a plane mirror.

  • The image is erect.
  • Image is virtual
  • Image is of the same size of the object.
  • Image distance is equal to object distance.

Based on the 4th point, we can say that, initially the distance between the person and the image was :

d1 = 6 + 6 = 12 \: m

  • Now, the person moved 3 metres towards the mirror, so now object distance becomes (6-3) = 3 metres.

  • So, new image distance will also be 3 metres.

So, new distance between person and image will be:

d2 = 3 + 3 = 6 \: m

So, new distance between person and image is 6 metres.
