Given:

A person standing at a distance "x" in front of a cliff fires a gun. Another person standing behind the person A at distance "y" from the Cliff hear the sound of the fire shot after 2s and 3s respectively.

To find:

The value of x and y ?

Calculation:

So, we can say that the trajectory of the sound emitting from the gun will move towards the cliff get reflected from the cliff and returned back to the source

In case of 1st person:

  • Sound travels a distance of (x + x) in 2 seconds.

 \therefore \: distance = speed \ \times time

 \implies \: 2x = 320 \times 2

 \implies \: x = 320 \: m

So, the 1st man is standing 320 metres away from cliff.

In case of 2nd person:

  • Sound travels a distance of (y + y) in 3 seconds.

 \therefore \: distance = speed \ \times time

 \implies \: 2y = 320 \times 3

 \implies \: y =160 \times 3

 \implies \: y =480 \: m

So, the 2nd man is standing 480 metres away from the cliff.
