A person standing between  two vertical cliffs and 640 metres away from the nearest cliff shouted. He heard the first echo after 4 sec and the second echo after 3 sec. Calculate :(i) the velocity of sound in air(ii) distance between the two cliffs

Speed = Distance/Time

Distance = 640
Time = 4/2

(i) Velocity of sound
= (640)/(4/2)
= 320 m/s

320 = 2x/7
x = 160×7
x = 1120 m

(ii) Distance between two cliffs
= x+640
= 1120+640
= 1760 m

Anonymous: Shubham ur answer is wrong i think ...
Anonymous: I think the answer is right...
Anonymous: Because for the second sound it reaches the person after being reflected from the second cliff
Anonymous: The time interval is 3+4 = 7...I think.
Anonymous: I don't know about that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i)
Distance , d = 640 m
Time = 4 sec
2 d = v × t
2× 640 = v × 4
1280 = v × 4
 v = 1280 ÷ 4
    = 320 m/s

Velocity of sound in air = 320 m/s
==================================================================================

2)

v = 320 m/s
t = 3 sec

2 d = v × t
     = 320 × 3
     = 960
d = 960 ÷ 2
d = 480 m

Distance of the person from the nearest cliff = 640 m
Distance of the person from the other cliff = 480 m

Distance between the cliffs = 640 + 480
                                            = 1120 metres

SARDARshubham: The question says that the second echo is heard 3 sec after first echo
SARDARshubham: so the total time for second echo will be 3+4 = 7 sec
Anonymous: no yaar
Anonymous: how can tht be ?
SARDARshubham: hey read the question properly yaar !
Anonymous: its not given 3 sec after 1st echo
Anonymous: it is given tht second echo reached 3 sec after reflection ...
SARDARshubham: then how the echo from the nearest cliff will be heard after the echo from another cliff
Anonymous: :(
Anonymous: I don't know about that
