A person standing between two vertical cliffs
produces a sound at time t = 0. First echo was
heard from the nearest cliff at time t = 3 s and the
second echo from the other cliff at time t = 5 s. If
the speed of sound in air is 320 m/s, then the
distance between the cliffs is
(1) 720 m
(2) 1120 m
(3) 2880 m
(4) 1280 m

The distance between the cliffs is 1280 m:

Explanation:

Given data:

T1  = 3s

T2 = 5s

Speed of sound in air = 320 m/s

Solution:

D1 = V x T1/2

    = 320 x 3/2 = 160 x 3 = 480 m

D2 = V x T2/2 = 320 x 5/2 = 160 x 5 = 800 m

Total distance   = D1 + D2

                                       =  480 m + 800 m = `1280 m

Thus the distance between the cliffs is 1280 m
