Concept

We will consider in the person frame of reference i.e. we will take east, west, north and south according to the person.  For reference let the west is in the left of the plane of the page and south is in the bottom of the plane of the page.

Given

The distance travelled in west direction = 8m, 5m and 8m

The distance travelled in south direction = 4m and 3m

Note that the left and right direction are taken according to the person.

Find

We have to calculate the net distance travelled in the horizontal direction.

Solution

Since the west is in the horizontal of the plane of the page and south is in the vertical direction of the plane of the page. Therefore the distance travelled in the horizontal direction is,

Distance = 8m + 5m + 8m

Distance = 21m

Hence the distance travelled in the horizontal direction is 21m.
