Provided that:

• Travelled towards east = 3 m

• Then travelled towards north = 4 m

To calculate:

  • Displacement

Solution:

  • Displacement = 5 metres

Using concept:

  • Phythagoras theorm

Required solution:

  • Kindly see attachment 2nd for the diagram related to this question for easy understanding!

Explanation: As we are able to see that the movements are looking in the shape of a right angled triangle, so here we can apply phythagoras theorm!

→ (H)² = (P)² + (B)²

According to question,

→ (H)² = (4)² + (3)²

→ (H)² = 16 + 9

→ (H)² = 25

→ H² = 25

→ H = √25

→ H = 5 m

Displacement = 5 metres

Phythagoras Theorm knowledge!

Phythagoras Theorm: Phythagoras Theorm is applied only in right angled triangles. Phythagoras Theorm states that in a right angled triangle, the square of the hypotenuse is always equal to the sum of the square of base and the sum of the square of perpendicular of the right angled triangle. Perpendicular is also known as the height.

A triangle is right angled triangle if the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the square of base and the sum of the square of perpendicular.

Kindly see the attachment 3rd

→ Right angled triangle is always equal to 90° and the other two triangle's are acute.

→ The side that is opposite to the right angle is known as hypotenuse.

→ The other two sides are known as base or perpendicular/height or legs of the right angled triangle.

→ Hypotenuse is the longest side of a right angled triangle.

Physics knowledge:

★ Displacement = Shortest distance covered by a body in a definite direction is called displacement.

→ Displacement may be positive, negative or zero whereas distance is always positive.

→ Distance is a scaler quantity whereas displacement is a vector quantity both having the same unit.

→ In general magnitude of displacement ≤ distance.
