first half distance = x/2
we know that S = vt
x/2 = v1t1
or,t1 = x/2v1
and also
x/2 = v2t2
or,t2 = x/2v2

avg velocity = total displacement/ total time
= x/(t1 + t2)
= x/(x/2v1 + x/2v2)
=4v1v2/( 2v1 +2v2)
= 2v1v2/(v1 + v2)
