Calculation of Distance

Answer: Distance between one place to another is 120 km and distance traveled by person is ( going to place and returning )  is 240 km.

Explanation:

Given that A person travels from one place to another at 30 km/hr.

And person returns at the speed of 120 km/hr .

Total time taken is 5 hours .

For sake of simplicity lets represents one place be A and another place be B.

lets assume distance from one place to another that is AB = x km\

Speed from A to B is 30 km / hr

As Time = Distance / Speed

Time taken to travel distance from A to B  = Distance from A to B / speed from A to B = x / 30

⇒Time taken to travel distance from A to B = (x/30)hrs

Return Speed from B to A is 120 km / hr

Time taken to travel distance from B to A  = Distance from B to A / speed from B to A = x / 120  ( as distance from B to A is same as from A to B )

Time taken to travel distance from A to B + Time taken to travel distance from B to A  = Total time

given that total time = 5 hours

⇒ (x/30  + x/120) = 5 hours

⇒ x ( 1/30 + 1/120) = 5 hours

⇒x( (4+1) /120 ) = 5

⇒ 5x/120 = 5

⇒ x = 5 × 120 / 5 = 120Km

So distance between one place to another = x = 120 km and distance traveled by person is 2x ( going to place and returning ) that is 2 x 120 = 240 km.
