A person walks 30 meters east, then walks 40 meters north. Determine distance and displacement.

Distance will be 70 meters and Displacement will be 50 metres

Explanation:

See for distance we just add the two values and we get the answer

Distance=30+40=70 metres

For Displacement we have to see one thing

you draw the journey of the man

and then join the starting and final point.

Look carefully, isn't it a right angle triangle with base 30 and height 40. Base is the its distance in East and height is the distance in North.

Now you have take out the smallest path that is the length of the line you made to join starting and final point and it's the hypotenuse of that triangle.

By the formula take out the length and it will come out to be 50 metres.
