A person weighing 80N stands on a weighing machine in a lift. He finds the reading to be 1)120N, 2)60N, 3)80N and 4)zero. find the acceleration and the direction of motion in the lift in each case

in the first case, since the weight is increasing, the lift is moving upwards
80N in kg= 8.16kg
W=m(g+a)
a=120/8.16-10
a=4.705 m/sec²

in the second case, since the weight is decreasing, the lift is moving downwards
W=m(g-a)
a=10-7.35=2.65m/sec²

in the third case, the lift is at rest

in the fourth case, the lift is freely falling down. the most unfortunate case!
